10 Driver Songs by The Fauves

1 March 2004

So, Andrew Cox says he doesn't have the courage to submit poems to Cordite. Well, we've done it for him: here's ten samples from ten Fauves songs, all of them about cars or some other mode of vehicular transport.

1. Thin Body, Thin Body (from Drive Through Charisma, 1993):
“When it becomes like an arid zone in your kitchen/ Out on the highway, fuck it, you’re hitching.”

2. The Driver Is You (from The Young Need Discipline, 1994):
“I’m a startled bird caught in your headlights/ Run me down, run me down/ It feels right.”

3. Ghosting the Road (from The Scissors Within EP, 1992):
“Mother and child ghost the road/ I do not know what a burden is.”

4. Brotherhood Bin (from Dwarf On Dwarf single, 1995):
“A Brothehood Bin/ Playboy magazine / A box of Panadeine/ I bought the magazine so I’m not driving.”

Dwarf On Dwarf single/ EP

5. Trevor (from The Young Need Discipline, 1994):
“Trevor, I’m not gonna cover for you anymore/ I’m not going to fill in for you at your auto-parts store.”

6. Understanding Kyuss (from Future Spa, 1996):
“Camp by a river somewhere/ Car stereo, still night air/ Crank it up I really like this bit/ Fuck that riff sounds really sick.”

7. Long Load (from Lazy Highways, 1998):
“Long, long, long, long, long, long, long, long load.”

Lazy Highways LP

8. Skateboard World Record (from Future Spa, 1996):
“From the parade ground/ On the back of a truck/ Right through town/ The kids all out and they’re running around …”

9. Our First Day On the Run (from Thousand Yard Stare, 2000):
“This is our first day on the run/ Rolled Red Rooster with a plastic gun/ Check the police identikit/ You look like a fucking lunatic/ I look like a north African terrorist.”

10 The Dirt Bike Option (b-side to Celebrate the Failure 2000):
“The dirt bike option paid off/ We never settled with the workers that we laid off/ They said they’d see us in arbitration/ Too busy building our dirt bike nation.”

Kickin’ On single (this is Peter Brock, by the way).
